Some things beg to be sped up. For example, the apparent eons it takes to check out a patient in clinic or the drudgery of those last few quarters before graduation. Other times we pine to slow some moments down, like graduation day or a trophy ceremony-or sex.
But since the concept of time is a human construct- meaning we made it up- perhaps we can.
Want to accelerate your speed of learning? Of course you do! Wouldn’t it be great to have 30+ years experience NOW? Then surely your problems would be solved! Want to be debt free NOW? You bet! And with a strong positive cash flow please. Unfortunately, this answer might sting a little:
SCHOOL IS NEVER OUT FOR THE MASTER.
After 33 years in practice, I am STILL learning. After 33 years in practice, I STILL want better skills, better technique, more efficient communicative prowess, seamless time and energy management, patients, (and patience). And I want them NOW.
After 33 years in practice, I still want the time to slow down when a mother tells me her child is no longer wetting the bed or ‘miraculously’ starts reading, walking or no longer takes drugs. And I DEFINITELY want to speed up those continuing ((yawn)) education classes.
I know your experiences may differ. School for me was awesome. I met lifelong friends, met Dr. Kim, enjoyed playing rugby and loved knowing that I was in the correct profession. Dr. Kim’s experience was different. Not a big fan of the academics, she only wanted to get out. It took her more than half her time in school to get the big idea- but she did. (Today her email is kimgetthebigidea@yahoo.)
In the millions or billions of years we have been around, your time in school is less than ONE blink of your eye. Leapfrogging to the next milestone will not only set a neuropathway that causes cortisol and adrenaline to dump into your system, but will leave you EMPTY and WANTING. What do you want when you achieve a goal? Another goal!
One key is to STAY PRESENT. Acknowledge what is happening in your universe now. How? Meditate, walk in Nature, journal, breathe and appreciate every little thing you can. Keep a gratitude log. Staying present is the key. Your “moments” will come, both the good ones and the messy ones. Be present for all of it. This is much easier said than done.
When Dr. Kim was struggling with her brain injury, I wanted nothing more than to speed up time and get this ugly chapter of our lives over. Nights lasted ages and her wins lasted a few fleeting moments. I recently finished editing the manuscript of my book, “Love Through the Darkness”. When editing, I was reliving some of those darkest of dark days. We are coming up on two years post wreck, and I realize how distorted time is. What seemed like “forever” was really only one 24- or 48 hour period of time, and now it’s already long ago.
In our March 2024 event, I will do my best to make your experiences last a lifetime, despite only being a few days. How? First, by finding out where you are in your faith, confidence and beliefs in yourself. Then, by carefully pouring gasoline on your fire or by causing a pattern interrupt that alters your trajectory, we can help you hurry up to slow down.
Either way, I hope to facilitate your growth and your enjoyment of the ride of your life.
Love Dr. Danny
