When I was involved in California politics, I was speaking to a state senator about Chiropractic. Specifically it was about a bill to curtail the blatant over prescribing of opioids for pain. After several minutes of my talking points (read: rant), he sat there in silence for what seemed like an eternity.
Then, blinking so much I thought he was rebooting, he said, “Thank you. I never really thought about it like that. You see, our knowledge of subjects is a mile wide but only an inch deep; we rely on people like you to help us understand the details as well as broader perspective.” Eventually changed his mind and voted for our bill.
Here's my point: when we do the inner work of healing ourselves; of shoring up our weaknesses and leading with our strengths, it cannot be a cursory endeavor. We cannot, for example, meditate for a few weeks and come to the conclusion that "meditation doesn't work", or that we "tried ". Inner work is messy, bloody, and scary, and it's a continuum. Meaning that the first few attempts to journal, meditate, pray, work out or practice non-judgment are likely to suck. "Your first is your worst”, I told my boys "Get on with it.” Our DYL is not an instant fix, not a panacea and certainly not the end-all-be-all to solve your dilemmas in practice – or life. It is a step in the right direction. Some of you have been doing inner work for a while; for others it will be novel. "School is never out for the master.” This program will likely have comfortable parts that you will thoroughly enjoy. It will hopefully have uncomfortable parts from which you will enjoy the fruits later. As any good design entails, they'll be twists and turns and unexpected experiences. This is the essence of life. My hope is that your experiences will be valuable in such a way that you will continue to improve and grow throughout your career, your relationships – including with yourself – and your life.
There are spots still available for our event June 18-22. Look for a video within the next few days. And as always, go vertical.
